Summer bus operations

Volunteers fulfill a variety of roles: handing out meals and milk to the kids, completing federally-required paperwork at each site, and interacting with the kids and their families.

We are particularly looking for volunteers who can help out on a regular basis or who can work at multiple sites in a bus loop on a given day every week.  The full day of operations is as follows: Work begins at the food storage (in Englewood), loading the day’s needs onto the bus at approximately 10:00 am, riding the bus  (or using your own transportation to go) from site to site and helping out at each site, finally returning to the food storage to unload. Work would end by 1:45.  We need folks who can ride the bus for the full day.

Volunteers are also needed “on the ground” at each site. Each bus stop is a half-hour to 45 minute shift; we would hope that each volunteer can cover multiple sites in a day. They are on site to meet the bus, help set up and provide service.

·

We understand that summer is sometimes a difficult time to schedule. We are flexible and will have volunteers to fill in when you are away.  (Or you could be one of those volunteers.)

Background checks are required for all volunteers 18 or older.

Specific “bus” shifts:

“Bus Rider” Volunteers actually ride the bus for the full day of operations, beginning and ending at Englewood.

Other volunteers meet the bus at the specified time and work each site.

Bus #1 will do the Westwood loop (Munroe, CMS and Goldrick).

Bus #2 will do the west Denver loop (Sanchez Park, Cowell and Barnum).

Bus #3 will go to Original Aurora/E. Colfax (Grace Apartments, MLK jr. Library, Shadow Tree Apartments.)

Stationary (non-bus) site:   Clayton Elementary and Cushing Park, 11 am to 12 pm (need 2 vomunteers per day, approx. 10:30am to 12:30pm.)

·

Pick up food

We replenish our food stocks at the Food Bank of the Rockies (every Monday or every other Monday, to be determined) beginning May 21. We need folks (who can handle 10 pound boxes of food bags and milks) to meet the bus  to help unload and inventory at our food storage in Englewood.

Marketing

Distribute information about the program. We have materials that need to be placed at retailers, social service agencies, and other venues. The major thrust is in May but we also have to make sure that supplies are replenished periodically.

Book Mobile

In addition to the federally-subsidized packaged meals, the Lunchbox Express also gave away over 5000 donated books last summer.  Many kids had never owned their own book before. It was obvious that in addition to feeding the bodies of our children, we also feed their minds. And help to bridge the educational gap during the summer break.

So, this coming summer, Lunchbox Express will provide books again.

We are seeking new or gently used books
for children ages 1 to middle school.
Please, only books that are appropriate for this age group.

Email lunchboxexpress@me.com for more information or to arrange pick up of donated books.
